Portable ventilators
Mechanical ventilators used in intensive care units are sophisticated devices. The guiding principle in their design is the provision of optimal lung ventilation. They incorporate precise but sizeable pneumatic components intended to utilize piped gases and mains electricity. However, when transporting patients receiving ventilatory support, these devices are rarely suitable because of their si...
متن کاملManual Resuscitators: Some Inconvenient Truths
The Old Testament appears to describe the successful application of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of a child, some 2,900 years ago (II Kings 4:34). According to O’Donnell and colleagues,1 the Babylonian Talmud describes a similar event 2,300 years ago: “One may give a woman (about to give birth) all assistance possible.... One may violate the Sabbath on her account.” What is meant by “being of a...
متن کاملEvaluation of 16 adult disposable manual resuscitators.
INTRODUCTION Disposable manual resuscitators are commonly used to ventilate patients during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, suctioning, and intrahospital transport, and their clinical performance is critical. METHODS We bench-tested 16 adult disposable manual resuscitators from 9 different manufacturers. We performed a series of tests and made observations using testing industry standards as a...
متن کاملEfficiency of manual resuscitators at birth.
The effectiveness of five neonatal/paediatric manual resuscitators was assessed in a group of babies born by caesarean section. Results showed that devices incorporating a large volume reservoir produced the greatest tidal volume, while those with smaller volume reservoirs could not be considered satisfactory for routine use during neonatal resuscitation.
متن کاملEvaluation of 4 new generation portable ventilators.
BACKGROUND Portable ventilators are increasingly utilized in the intra- and inter-hospital transport of patients. We evaluated 4 portable ventilators, Impact EMV, CareFusion LTV 1200, Newport HT70, and Hamilton T1, in terms of triggering, delivered tidal volume (V(T)) accuracy, battery duration, delivered F(IO(2)) accuracy, and gas consumption. METHODS Triggering was tested using a microproce...
